Who We Are

The Miss Universe Organization empowers women to develop the confidence they need to achieve their personal best. A confident woman has the power to make real change, starting in her local community with the potential to reach a global audience. We encourage every woman to get out of her comfort zone, be herself, and continue to define what it means to be Confidently Beautiful.

Run by Women for Women

The Miss Universe Organization is a company run by women for women, built on a foundation of inclusion and continues to be a celebration of diversity. Annually, nearly ten thousand young women participate in Miss Universe pageant events. The mission of the organization is to provide the tools which help women to be their personal best. Self-confidence is the key. Every woman should have the confidence to stand up in any situation and declare, "I am secure and that's what makes me beautiful!"

"I am secure and that's what makes me beautiful!"
OUR MISSION

Creating Opportunities

The contestants and titleholders that have gone through the Miss Universe system are able to cultivate their personal career goals, advocate for humanitarian issues and be a voice to affect positive change in the world. These women are forward thinking and motivated to not just talk about this change, but to initiate it. They have gone on to high-profile careers in government, business, finance, broadcasting, as well as film and television.

Breaking Stereotypes

Research has shown the #1 obstacle for women to overcome in reaching their potential in any endeavor is a lack of self-confidence. In doing so our contestants and titleholders have the opportunity to grow as women and be confident in any goal they choose to pursue. While we are a competition, the women who participate also learn to help one another and create a network of friends and colleagues on which to draw support.

Miss Universe Initiatives

The Miss Universe Organization places priority on the importance of getting involved and giving back by providing a dedicated international platform of charitable partnerships. As leaders and role models within their communities, our contestants and titleholders work to affect positive change through volunteering, fundraising and advocacy. During their reign, our winners are given the tools to personally and professionally enrich others by dedicating themselves to raising awareness and much needed funds for philanthropic endeavors.

FAQ

HOW CAN I ENTER THE MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT?

CAN I COMPETE MORE THAN ONCE?

Contestants may compete more than once in the state pageants, but only once per year. However, contestants may only compete in the national pageants (Miss Universe, Miss USA and Miss Teen USA) once. The winner of Miss Teen USA may compete in Miss USA, but only after her reign has ended and after she competes in and wins her state title.

HOW ARE THE PAGEANT SITES CHOSEN?

The host sites for the pageants are selected based on a number of factors including city infrastructure and capabilities of the venue for production.

IS THE MISS AMERICA PAGEANT DIFFERENT FROM MISS UNIVERSE?

Yes. In 1952, Catalina Swimsuits, formerly a sponsor of Miss America, founded Miss Universe and Miss USA in Long Beach, California. Although some women compete in both Miss USA and Miss America, the two systems are completely separate.

  • The Miss Universe system has no talent competition.
  • Miss USA goes on to represent her country at Miss Universe.
  • The Miss USA pageant is televised internationally.

ARE THERE AGE REQUIREMENTS?

Yes. Miss Universe and Miss USA contestants must be at least 18 and under 28 years of age before January 1st in the year they hope to compete in the Miss Universe or Miss USA pageant. Miss Teen USA candidates must be at least 14 and under 19 years of age before January 1st in the year they hope to compete in the Miss Teen USA pageant.

WHAT CAN I DO TO BEST PREPARE FOR THE PAGEANTS?

A contestant should understand the values of The Miss Universe Organization and the responsibilities of the title. She should be able to express what her personal and professional goals would be during her reign. Consider the below when competing at the state and/or national level.

  • Describe what your aspirations are and why you are competing for a title.
  • What have you done in your community to show leadership?
  • How would you use your title to impact society?
  • What social group would be your focus and why?
  • How would you help solve issues in the world, not just in your home country?
  • How can you make this world a better place if you were crowned?

Contestants should also discuss preparing for the pageants with their country or state directors as they have a wealth of information, contacts and referrals.

HOW MANY CONTESTANTS COMPETE IN MISS UNIVERSE, MISS USA AND MISS TEEN USA?

In the case of Miss Universe, between 80 and 100 countries send a candidate to compete. For Miss USA and Miss Teen USA, 51 contestants participate in the pageant which includes all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

CAN I BE MARRIED?

No, contestants may not be married or pregnant. They must not have ever been married, not had a marriage annulled nor given birth to, or parented a child. The titleholders are also required to remain unmarried throughout their reign.

WHAT IS THE MISS UNIVERSE ORGANIZATION LOOKING FOR IN A CONTESTANT?

A contestant must be confident. She must be able to demonstrate authenticity and articulate her ambitions as a titleholder. The competitions showcase and evaluate the contestant's aspirations and are judged by accomplished business leaders, philanthropists, and public figures.

WHAT DOES MISS UNIVERSE, MISS USA AND MISS TEEN USA DO AFTER THEY ARE CROWNED?

After a winner is crowned, she is relocated to New York City where she will meet her new Miss Universe family. Through the organization, the winner is provided a platform for possibility based on her objectives for the year. Alongside The Miss Universe Organization, she will plan how to achieve her goals on the national and global scale.

Competition Rules

The winner of the competition must be confident. She must understand the values of our brand and the responsibilities of the title. She must have the ability to articulate her ambition. A contestant should demonstrate authenticity, credibility and exhibit grace under pressure. The women who compete embody the modern, global aspiration for the potential within all women.

Each competition begins with preliminary interviews that include a swimsuit or athletic wear and evening gown presentation show. These preliminary events are especially important as it will be the first time the judges and fans really get to know the contestants. The preliminary competition is the driving force in selecting the Semifinalists.

The live show and final competition kicks off with an announcement of the Semifinalists. Each of these contestants will walk the runway during the swimsuit or athletic wear segment displaying her dedication to a healthy lifestyle.

The semifinalists move on to the second stage of the competition during the evening gown segment. The judges and fans will see the contestants’ personal style as they walk the stage in their evening gown of choice. However, the exact design of the gown does not count towards the total score and instead the judges focus on how confidently each woman presents herself.

From the scores given in the evening gown competition, the Top 6 competitors are chosen, bringing them to the Final Question round. Each woman selects a judge at random who presents a question focused on various social, cultural and political topics. The Final Question round will determine the contestant’s ability to articulate themselves under pressure while sharing a thoughtful, well-informed response. Again, all scores are averaged and the Top 3 contestants move on to the Final Look.

The event concludes with the host announcing the winner. In the event that the winner is unable to fulfill her duties, the first-runner up will take her place.
